Back in 2009, Teton Waters Ranch was founded on an old potato farm in Idaho, at the base of the Teton mountain range. Solely based on first glance, we knew rehabilitating the grasslands and abused soil on the land would be a challenge…one that we gladly took on. How exactly are we able to make grass green again? We’d like to thank our cattle.
Our mission to create a sustainable food system starts with a farming technique called regenerative agriculture. This system is used across the world and notorious for increasing biodiversity, enriching soils, improving watersheds and enhancing ecosystem services on the land where it is practiced. Now that is music to our ears. Having been in a position where the land on the old potato farm in Idaho had to be completely restored, we knew we had to use a farming method that would start moving us in the right direction. And it did exactly that. Once we saw how much good grass-fed beef can do for the planet, we decided we couldn’t stop there. We’ve partnered with ranchers who use this 100% grass-fed model to positively restore grasslands around the world.
The regenerative agriculture process begins by planting native grasses, rotating our cattle and letting them fertilize where they eat. As our cattle move across the land and push their fertilizer into the ground, they are simultaneously sequestering carbon back into the Earth. We are proud that our farming techniques do not contribute to carbon emissions into the atmosphere or encourage environmental harm to surrounding areas – our technique focuses on restoring grasses to make them green again. Teton Waters Ranch has set out to make a positive difference on our lands, and our community. We couldn’t be more grateful for the success that regenerative agriculture, and our cattle’s leg work, has done to restore grasslands across the nation and world.
In addition to having free range of land through regenerative agriculture, our cattle receive the most comfortable, humane, and high-quality living standards during the entirety of their lives. To ensure that this remains true, all of our partnered ranches must be Certified Humane by the Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) organization. With properly managed land and livestock, our cattle are able to mimic traditional patterns of wild herds by moving across the grassland, tilling and fertilizing the Earth as they go. By practicing holistic management on our ranches, the cattle’s movement is concurrently aerating the soil beneath them and helping the grass flourish. Studies have shown that healthy grasslands help purify air, reduce threats of droughts and floods, and support wildlife diversity in the surrounding lands.
